Our Story
At the pinnacle of Red Hill, surrounded by ocean on three sides, lies R·H·V. Planted in 1989 by Sir Peter Derham, it is one of the founding vineyards of the Mornington Peninsula and is famous for the rich, red ferrosol soils that define the area.
With only 23 acres under vine, our small, low-yielding vineyard is predominantly planted to Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Located at an altitude of between 150m - 200m above sea level, it has a principally East-West orientation and is home to a maritime cool climate.
At R·H·V our philosophy is simple; work with nature not against her.
We believe in a minimal intervention approach in the vineyard - we don’t use herbicides, pesticides or chemical fertilisers. We hand-rear and harvest our vines.
In the winery, wines are left to develop naturally under wild fermentation. We don’t pump, filter or use fining agents.
The result of our patient approach are naturally balanced wines of distinct vineyard character- each a pure expression of time and place.
R·H·V acknowledges and pays respect to the Boon Wurrung and Bunurong people, the traditional custodians of these ancient lands and waters.
Our Vigneron
At R·H·V we are privileged to be guided by viticulturist and winemaker Luke Curry. Luke has decades of experience managing vineyards and making wine on the Mornington Peninsula. His wines have won numerous accolades and can be found on the wine lists at some of Australia's top restaurants.
Luke oversees all elements of the winemaking process at R·H·V; beginning with the viticultural decisions in the vineyard and ending with the finished wine in the bottle.
His guiding tenet is that "a wine is the sum of its parts; the patch of dirt it is grown, the seasons it experiences, the hands that grow it and the hands that make it".
At R·H·V our approach to winemaking mirrors our approach in the vineyard -that of minimum intervention. We operate on a minimum 2- year winemaking process from harvest to release. Our methodical, un-hurried approach allows nature time to do the hard work for us.
We don't make "to style" but instead produce wines that are a reflection of 'time'; the challenge each season presents, and 'place'; the terroir of each of the climats in the vineyard. Our aim is to produce wines that artfully express these nuances in each and every glass.
Our Wines
Our R·H·V "Home Vineyard" is located in the heart of Red Hill and comprises of three microclimates or climats - each with its own unique story to tell.
Climat 151
Lower on the hill, Climat 151 is planted to a North-South orientation and is the most sheltered climat of the vineyard. Visually defined by its undulations, Climat 151 experiences variation in ripening times resulting in complex, layered wines that display good tension between vibrant fruit and herbaceous character.
Climat 180
Located at the top of the vineyard's defining Eastely slope, Climat 180 occupies an altitude of 180m above sea level and faces Western Port Bay. With a series of long, uniform well-drained rows, Climat 180 expresses wines that display a singularity of focus. The most exposed climat of the vineyard, cool southerly fronts from Bass Strait moderate sun exposure yielding generous wines with concentration, purity and length.
RESERVE Climat 175
The most famous climat of the vineyard, Climat 175 sits at an elevation of 175m above sea level and enjoys panoramic views over the entire vineyard across to Phillip Island on the horizon. Its steep east- facing slope and exposure to the elements makes it one of the most challenging blocks, but it rewards with clusters of small berries that produce wines that display a concentrated expression of site.
